At what time of year does enrollment occur?
Families who are interested in applying to Blackland Prairie Conservatory & Atelier should begin the process one year prior to their desired entry date. Our enrollment opens in December and acceptance letters are mailed in March.
When can I tour your school?
We do not offer tours during school hours as to not disrupt the students’ daily rhythm. We host several Open House events per school year. During the open house, you will be able to hear all about our program, philosophy, mission, vision, and ask any questions you may have.
Our Open Houses are reserved for prospective families. If you are an educator, email firstname.lastname@example.org for information about our school.
Am I required to attend an Open House?
Yes, all prospective families are required to attend an open house prior to applying for admission.
Why does BPCA charge an application fee?
With several families seeking placement at any given moment, managing our application process takes an enormous amount of time and effort. We charge a nominal $100 fee for families to apply to ensure that we are working with families who genuinely want to be a part of our community.
Why does the school require a parent interview?
Given the tremendous interest in Blackland Prairie Conservatory & Atelier, we want to create a more meaningful admission process instead of a simple first-come, first-served waitlist. We request that all legal guardians attend so the faculty and staff can meet and greet the whole family. We are a unique school to Dallas and want to make sure families understand the pedagogy and methods we use to teach. Our goal is to admit families who we believe will be a great long term fit for BPCA. Parent interviews allow us to learn more about you, your family, and your child. It also allows you to learn more about us!
How old does my child have to be to attend BPCA?
Children entering our Moon Garden Preschool must be 2.5 years old by August 1, 2018 for the 2018/2019 school year.
For the 2019/2020 school year, children entering our Moon Garden Preschool must be 3.5 years old by August 1, 2019.
Do you offer part-time or homeschool co-op programs?
Preschool (2.5-3.5 year olds) parents have an option to choose the 5 day half day (8:30-11:40am) program, we do not offer part-time programs for kindergarten or grades students.
Does my child have to be potty trained?
We fully understand that “toilet learning” is a process and welcome the opportunity to partner with you as your child goes through the steps of toilet learning. We do ask that children entering preschool are in the process of potty training. We encourage you to send your child to school in underpants, as we work together on toilet learning.
Do you require immunizations?
We do require student vaccination records or a Texas Vaccine Exemption form. As a community, we stay under 10-12% for non-immunized students.
Do you offer before or after school care?
We do not currently offer before or after school care options, care hours are 8:15am-3:00pm.
What are your school’s office hours?
School Year Office Hours 8:30am – 3:00pm
We are closed all major holidays and school breaks.
Does your program have a religious component?
Although we do not have a religious component in our curriculum, we do celebrate and honor special days (without going into religious detail) of our currently enrolled families. Blackland Prairie Conservatory & Atelier highlights the many traditions that our students celebrate with their families. Drawing on similarities helps us to realize how connected we are with one another and how alike we are. Children should recognize that everyone’s holidays are culturally significant and meaningful.
Religious Studies will be introduced in later grades, investigating the most basic components of human society and culture. Understanding the fundamental motivations for the behavior of human groups lies in the knowledge of religious beliefs and practices.
What is your Discipline Policy?
Discipline is a process of learning self-control, respect for others, and responsibility. Positive methods of discipline will be practiced at all times so children are aware of an acceptable code of conduct at school. Efforts to help students understand behaviors that are allowed, accepted, and encouraged will be used. Other stop-and-think strategies that lead to positive results through positive reinforcement, good role modeling, and redirection will also be used. For any on-going issues, teachers will communicate with parents so that school and home are working together with a child’s best interests in mind.
What if my child has a food allergy?
For complex combinations of food allergies and dietary restrictions we may ask you to pack your child’s snack. For example if your child has a vegan diet and is sensitive to wheat, dairy, and soy we may not be able to provide snacks that meet their nutritional needs.
Do you offer financial aid?
We are not currently able to provide financial aid.
What are the benefits of starting academics in first grade?
We teach to the whole child so that children enter first grade, not just ready to learn how to read, but also possessing the executive functions and social skills for lifelong success. Emotional and social development are an essential part of school. The development of executive functions at an early age are an indicator of success later in life. Our early child programs focus on skills like empathy, self-help/self-care, coordination, cutting, attention span, memorization through song, waiting in line, following directions, sharing, communicating, making friends, and most importantly, PLAY. BPCA cultivates emotional literacy and empathy to develop self-esteem, nurture self-expression, creativity, and reflection so that the whole child is prepared for academic success.
